Hello,

Ever since i have decided to to study nursing, i have been told by numerous people that i am mad for even thinking about entering the nursing profession.

Read up on it online as well, and saw that being depressed, anxious, having loooong shifts and horrible co workers goes hand in hand with being a nurse. Especially since RN's apparently dislike EN's because they feel that training and supervising the EN keeps them from taking care of the patients etc..all this may not be true of course, but it sure is confusing for me

It is discouraging and scary and confusing to boot. I have been accepted in to a Diploma of Community Welfare course as well, which i originally only applied to just in case i did not get into nursing.

I am not thinking maybe i should just do the CW course, after all that is helping people too...but in my heart i want to be a nurse.

It's just that i am so scared i am making a mistake with nursing and that it will be horrible and i wll be wasting a year studying the EN course

Is anyone else experiencing this at all?

Hi there,

If your heart says go with it, then go with it. The biggest mistake would be never attempting something that is your heart's desire. Nursing is like other professions, you get your nice, you get your nasty, you get your long days, but in the end I think it is very rewarding. You can travel and work overseas, it can open many doors. If you decide you don't like it, it can lead you into other things, eg, psychology, physiotherapy etc. There are many areas also in nursing - not just the typical hospital nurse. You could do community nursing, work at a child health clinic, work as a clinical nurse specialist out in a remote area. I don't think you've got anything to lose. Go for it!

All the best with whatever decision you make.
