Hello Everyone!

I'm new to the site - looks great, by the way. I've reading many of the posts in the forums over the last few months, and they have been a great resource in finding out the "inside story" of nursing. So I have decided I want to be a nurse!

I've applied to a few Div 2 courses, don't know if I've gotten in. I really would like to get in to Box Hill TAFE as they are close to where I live, but there are only 100 places (part-time and full-time included), and when I sat the test, the girl next to me was applicant 384! I have heard since then that there were about 500 applicants - and there is no interview, just that test. *sigh*

My question is whether anyone knows much about the Div 2 traineeships that are *allegedly* run by some hospitals/facilities. There is course info only on the TAFE sites, and plenty of hype on government sites, but I have yet to find an employer offering them!

Any info appreciated, or just a hello too!

Hope to join you all in the Student Nursing ranks soon.

Looking for that,

Silver Lining.

Hi,

I did a Div 2 traineeship, and they are run through the Tafes - when I did mine it was through Victoria University, who used an agency to co-ordinate everything. You had to sit the entrance test exactly the same, but it was for a traineeship position, and if you passed they notified you, and then you had to be very proactive to find a nursing home to take you on as a trainee. They did have some places that they helped people find - but they liked you to ring around and try to find your own, which I did. Other people in the course ( not that many) were already working in aged care for their employer and got offered traineeships provided they passed the entrance test. The course was for 2 years - went to school for one day per week (curriculum is same as full or part time), and had to work at the nursing home for a minimum of 17 hours per week as a trainee Div 2. Also did clinical placements in acute for 2 weeks and either rehab or mental health for 2 weeks - got credited for all other placements due to ongoing work experience. Vic Uni stopped these a couple of years ago, Swinbourne used to do them too - but they dont do nursing anymore, and RMIT used to offer approx 30 trainee places per year. The advantage of doing it this way is firstly you get paid a wage and secondly you finish up with 2 years experience in basic nursing, wound management, documentation etc. and are then in a very good position to move on to acute care - either agency or bank if you want to. I went straight on to do div 1 when i finished.

Good luck with your future in nursing,

Lauz
