If you eventually want to do midwifery, is it better to do a bachelor of nursing first or is it better to simply do a bachelor of midwifery?

Either or. The final year of the midwifery course can be taken at a later date as a diploma (it the same course I think).

I guess it depends on how set your mind is. Perhaps if you get out there and experience life as an RN you might realize that your heart lies somewhere else. It's a big commitment to do midwifery straight up and adds another year of study on top. It also however makes you far more employable as many other areas of nursing find the qualification desriable.

It's your choice really although if it were me (and it is to a certain extent as I'm also studying nursing). I'd do my RN first and get a taste of the other area's of nursing prior to devoting another year of study. If you think about it thats what most nurses do. Get out there and experience stuff before committing to a specific stream.

Meh, my thoughts anyway.

Hey Minigmgoit, thanks for your thoughts. I am a mature age student, I have started my diploma of nursing, done six months and am in the process of applying to change over to uni at the beginning of this year. I am very torn about what course to do as my age is against me when it comes to time spent studying. I am 43 and loving the course but wonder if midwifery in the future will be done solely through the midwifery degree or whether it will still be beneficial to do nursing first, then a specialty. There seems to be definite feelings within the nursing field on this issue. In any case, I appreciate any advice. :)
