I'm an Aussie/Canadian, currently in British COlumbia. I work in acute care on a interdisciplinary consultant team assessing and managing the care of older adults on the acute care units in the hospital (Geriatric Evaluation and Management - GEM team). Are there any similar programs or teams in Australia? How do you advocate for comprehensive and appropriate care for the older adult in acute care? Can anyone provide me with contact details of a gerontological nurse practitioner?

I work in a specialty acute care of the elderly ward. We are next door to the department of geriatrics which has 6 geriatricians who visit twice weekly (usually more often), two registrars and two resident medical officers on the ward monday-friday. We have our own physiotherapist who is on the ward 4 days per week and in our Falls and Balance clinic once a week. We have on call, speech pathologists and nutritionists with training in geri's. We have a full time RN working as a discharge planner who liaises with a LINK community nurse. We are really lucky that we have all this. We currently have 3 RN's in our town studying their Masters to become Nurse Practitioners. I will pass your details on the them and ask if they can reply to you. Good Luck

More than five years since last response.

Nurse Practitioners have become more common noew, in NSW anyway.

Do a Google search for ' Psychogeriatric Nurses Association'; or 'Quality Aged Care Nurses Forum', or Alzheimer's Australia, or any one of hundreds of relevant links to appropriate Nurse organisations.
