Hello:) I stumbled across this site and am in hope that someone out there could please help me. I was wondering how I can apply for a career path in aged care? I've heard that students need to be in a graduate program once out of Uni, and am not sure where to go or who to talk to in order to find out if aged care places offer this, as well as how one goes about applying for a position? We're just not assisted at all in our transition into the "real world" by Uni which has left me feeling very unsure about correct procedures and policies in order to go about all of this.

Also, does anyone know of any really great aged care homes where the nurses there have a passion for what they do? I was on a clinical placement in aged care a year ago, and found it to be anything but caring and would not like to work within an environment like this (not until i have more skills, knowledge and confidence anyway!)

Thank you so much for your time

Hello. It is refreshing to see someone else wanting to be a 'great RN' in Aged Care.
Hopefully, we are of the same make up. I have worked in Aged Care and too have seen a lot
of 'uncaring', well, not the sort of care I would have for my older relative. There has to be genuine
compassion and not 'a get in and get out', job.

Unfortunately in this climate of budget minded business money making run nursing homes, there isn't a cent
more spent than necessary. Staffing mix and levels could be a whole lot better and the current 3 year AgeD Care
Campaign', "Because we Care" is worth looking up as it'll change things for us in QLD. Better pay in the end too.

I had done a year of Agency RN work in Aged Care and therefore have seen
virtually every nursing home here on the Sunshine Coast. None and I mean none were my 'ideal' place to work so I picked
one close to home and that is very new. The 'very new' part meant there wasn't established in old old ways nor with 'clicks'
of 'old' staff that feel they know it all. I felt maybe I can be a small part of forming 'new and better ways' to better assist the job.
I like to see things done well and right.

Keep in touch and let me know what you are going to do. Do you have a Facebook as I am in there and like to chat to fellow
dedicated nurses. Indeed Uni does NOT prepare one for the 'real world' and even after being an EEN for many years, I still
felt thrown in the RN deep end in a regular hospital. It wasn't for me; I love the older people too much and right now I AM MAKING
A DIFFERENCE.

Hi Irene - glad to meet you too, no sorry I'm not a facebook groupie yet:) but slowly getting more with it. We are starting a new blog though for www.caringuk.com which will have general bits of fun and trivia on it for friends and family of residents - so maybe facebook might be a good thing to consider...
