Hi Molly,

My name is on a waiting list at Southbank Institute of TAFE in Brisbane. Can't seem to get much info out of them such as, should I fill out application form etc etc, or how long waiting list is. I think it is a pretty popular course, being govern. funded, so I guess I just wait. Will have a look at TAFE SA website and see what the go is.

thanks RC

Hello Rotator Cuff ! I do not think SouthBank TAFE does have open learning for EEN as I remember I was told 4 years ago they do not have it and told me to ring Rockhampton Uni which I did and they told me that SA TAFE has it only and I finished my EEN course with SA TAFE, they should have a intake now for Jan 2008, it is best to get start now before the closing date. Best is to call Hazel Bosio / Administration and Enrolment Centre / Community Services and Health Phone (08) 8648 8816 Fax: (08) 8648 8926 this is the quickest way and also you could email: Hazel.Bosio@tafesa.edu.au Hope this will help you. I had to do first semester one week workshop and second semester two week workshop away from home and stay and I enjoyed it very much and made friends with my student buddys. Best Wishes molly

Hello Rotator Cuff ! One more question: you stated the EEN SouthBank TAFE is goverment funded does that mean? will you get it for free or a discount ? As I remember SA TAFE does give fees concession for Health Care card / Pensioner's Concession card and Veteran's Affairs Concession Card, you will need to ask if they still do it. molly

Hi Molly,

thanks for your info. I had a feeling you would probably have to go there to do something. Can't go away have family and work commitments. Govrn. funded means that the whole course costs is reduced say it used to be like 9000 dollar it is now like 7500 dollar. I am not eligible for any concessions, and anyways all the paperwork and they want to know too much (a bit like the are u using too much water questionaire). I guess I am just being a little impatient in wanting to get started. TAFE have intake in february next year.

thanks RC

Hi RC.. depending on where you life in Brissy you should check out Metro South Institute of TAFE as well. They have a campus in Alexandra Hills and another out at Logan. They have greater govt support.. EEN course cost approx $5k or so depending on whether you're full paying or in a govt. spot. No idea about distance ed. though as I never asked.

Hello RC ! Visit this website maybe this will help you.

www.australian-universities.com/distance-learning

and EEN cost now around $12k not $5k for the full course, I paid for my EEN distance in 2002 around $7k and the prices did go up.

Hi People, Guess What? I will probably give TAFE a miss and do my EEN through the Australian Instutite for Care Development, which is the Education arm of Aged Care Queensland. It is more expensive that TAFE, and they have been really helpful with information for me. I did send yet another email to tafe on Wednesday and if dont hear anything from them, then they miss out> it is rather frustating when you are trying to decide which action to take. BTW somebody was looking for some information on wound care. Here some more sites: www.ciap.health.nsw.gov.au/wcansw - Wound Care Association of NSW "Pressure Ulcer Prevention - A consensus Statement" and Standards. Lots of info on European Wound Management Association at www.ewma.org. Also Department of Health and Ageing - Infection Control Guidelines. And that not all, World Union of Healing Societies - "minimising Pain at Wound Dressing-related Procedures" www.wuwhs.org. Thats all folks.

Hi Centralites, Done It! I will now be doing my EEN through Australia Institue of Care Development. I start in September/October. I must attend 10 class days over a semester (6 months). Class days are on a Thursday, might have to give up my Thursday A/noon shift, but just wait and see. TAFE were fluffing me around too much, by not replying to my emails, which in turn hindered my decision making process. I have a question that has been bugging me for bit lately.......... How to deal with Demanding, Self-centered, me, me, me, me, me, just me,bugger everybody else........ RESIDENTS, and where have you been what have you been doing, I buzzed like 3minutes ago!!!!!!!!!!!!! (To bad if somebody is dying and needing that extra special care). I just pisses me off. I am a pretty easy going person, but really. Just build a bridge and get over it, because thats the way they are. Maybe doing this EEN course will help me understand.

I am just finishing of my EEN course through Spencer TAFE. Our group will be the last lot through as Diploma of Nursing Pre-Enrolment as in our newletter today the course is changing to National Diploma of Nursing Pre-Enrolment.

I have obtained this qualification TOTALLY through distance learning. Something I so dealy love. I would never go back to sitting in a classroom all day.

With one child with additional needs and not well myself, distance learning works AROUND ME not me WORKING AROUND school. It's perfect. But does take dedication on your behalf to be disciplined enough to sit and study when you really don't want to. And then keep this up for up to 3 years. But if I managed it I am sure lot's more can. I had a lot on my plate and to juggle but I still managed to get it all done.

The only drawback of doing the course this way is going to Whyalla SA for Compulsary Workshops. I live on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. A 2 solid day drive away. But it's a great excuse to get together and meet others who are also suffering brain overload. And a fantastic sight it is to see all those white shirts in one room, worn proudly by each and every one of us. It gives you a sense of pride that you have achieved so much.

This is the second course I have done through Spencer TAFE. The first being finishing of my Aged Care. And can not highly recommend the school enough. They have been great.

All my friends who are considering nursing I send to them.

Check out the Spencer TAFE site for info on the course.

Good luck. You can do it.

Hi Rotator Cuff, really demanding patients can be quite annoying, but you need to remember YOU are there for THEM. They feel they have a need to be met, there is all kinds of emotional issues they may be going through. It is unfair of you to expect them to understand you may have other priorities. Also, why are they there? I presume its because they aren't well? Who can be patient and concerned about others when they aren't well? Its entirely normal to think if only yourself - the pain alone can cause that.

Remember why you are there - it is for their benefit, not yours. The best way to deal with such patients is to not let it stress you, but remain cheerful and professional. Simply say 'well I'm here now' in a pleasant voice and get on with it.

Hi Sage White,

Thanks for your advice, I just found it hard to accept, that when their needs are met, like having all their evening cares done, they still want more attention, and other residents have not been attended too yet. I feel some of it is behavioural. Anyway they all eventually get attended too. I just build a bridge and get over it. but i do enjoy my work, even though it can be a challange.

i have just graduated as a EEN and to my knowledge you can do it by distance education. i studied in bundaberg but my course with tafe was done through Cairns. Try and get in contact with Northern Queensland Institute of Tafe. dont have there contact details, just contact your local tafe to get details.

Hi Redrecks,

i also live in Victoria and have been considering doing the Div 2 course thru TAFE SA for about 12mths now. right now im trying to decide whether to acutally apply for next year. i'd be doing it around a full time job but am pretty sure i could cope fine. my only concern is regarding the compulsory on campus stuff which ive read about and you mentioned. how did that work for you?? how much time was it and did you find the cost much? i figure flights to SA arent so expensive these days so maybe its just a case of saving up and being prepared.

also how long has it taken you to complete?

cheers

Hi Jules,

I took the whole 3 years part time to complete my course as I am a single mum and all.

I actually drove to SA which worked out cheaper for me than flying. As you need to get a flight to Adelaide and then on a small plane to Whyalla.

I stayed at the caravan park on the foreshore. But be WRANED they will try and rip you off left, right and centre.

A lot of girl's and guy's stayed at the Uni dorms/units for $40 a week when divided up. It's within walking distance of the TAFE and they are very nice unit's. EVERYTHING bar food is in the unit's. If the TAFE know you want to stay at the unit's they place you with 7 other student's in your workshops. Don't panic though. The unit's are divided into 4 areas. ALL with there own bathrooms and private rooms with air con, desk, TV adapter etc. So plenty of privacy. It works out very cheap. If I do go back to do my Advanced Diploma I will be staying at the unit's.

I had to leave my son at home with reletives for the 1st workshop, but the second one he attended with me. The Library, the school councillor can arrange this, had Dylan all day while I was in class. Alternativly he spent some mornings or afternoons at the caravan park by himself. Enjoying the air con and beach. Lucky him.

We used the workshop as an excuse for a 'holiday' at that time.

Hi to Everybody,

I am an engineer and working at Sydney and I am interested and wanting to deversify into enrolled nursing. My wife is a Registered Nurse and every night she will always tell me her day at work and that made my interest in enrolled nursing. I have browsed the Spencer Institute Tafe SA website but can not find a specific article about EEN distance education. Could anyone help me or suggest any other institution that offers EEN distance education.
